A Phenology, Photography (2015-17) This photographic work bears witness to the subtle beauty and daily change in my new environment at the far western edge of the North American Eastern Deciduous Forest -the Upper Midwest. In this work the potential of the camera to render specific detail, light, and local color is contrasted with the painter's horizonless, ambiguous spaces that emphasize texture, chromaticity, and all-over compositions. This diaristic body of photographs yields to the abstraction inherent in landscape, but also taps into its ability to render the state of the nation throughout the growing, chaotic political scene of 2016-17. The effect is a journal of images that reveal nature as both safe haven and source of anxiety.
