Buzz Cut

This morning I woke up to the sound of a small gas-powered motor. I parted the blinds to capture this view from my window (yeah, not much of a view). The shrub was being trimmed.

When all was done, quite a crew cut. Yikes. However you like it, folks.

Winter Hazel Buttercup

The other day me and my friend were walking in Brooklyn Heights discussing our studio future and we both noticed a small shrub in a whiskey barrel. Forsythia? No, clearly not. But what is it? Hmm..., the flowers looked like little lanterns. Has an Asian lineage, possibly.
Well, I found out what it was when The Occasional Gardener had a post about it the next day. I think we discovered this shrub on the same day! Of course, there was an enormous one (compared to the diminutive specimen we saw) at the entrance to Wave Hill.

Look out Forsythia, Winter Hazel Buttercup Corylopsis pauciflora (hardly paucitous!) is on your tail.

New York City Garden Center and Plant Nursery Map

This map of nurseries is not an endorsement of any particular business, but a resource for anyone looking for a nursery in the NYC area. Undoubtedly, I missed a few that are out there. Use the comment option if you have a favorite I missed. I chose to not include any florists or hardware stores that also sell bedding plants. There are many more of those in NYC.

I included some nurseries that are in NJ, Yonkers, and Long Island despite their outlying status. Those are marked with the empty marker.

Some regions are woefully without local nurseries, although many of these areas are probably served by hardware stores, florists, and some big box stores. Specifically Queens, which has more planting space than any borough, but also is in closer proximity to all the suburban nurseries.
